The following statement was read at the Canada C3 Expedition Finale by Shannon Monk Payne, Canada C3 Indigenous Education and Community Liaison on behalf of the Assembly of First Nations National Chief Perry Bellegarde.
On behalf of the Assembly of First Nations and the AFN Executive Committee, I extend
warm greetings to all attending the Canada C3 Expedition Finale and all those who took
part in the journey.
This trip from coast to coast to coast was an adventure in reconciliation, knowledge
gathering, and education. I was pleased to hear about the ship stopping at various First
Nations traditional territories. Most importantly, participants were able to disembark and
engage with the people to learn more about their lives.
It is important that the spirit of reconciliation flow through all areas of Turtle Island in
order to set a positive course for the next Seven Generations. It is important we get to
know each other, appreciate and celebrate our diversity and build bridges of
The C3 Expedition is an example of what can be accomplished when Canadians and
First Nations work and travel together along the road to reconciliation. Thank you to all
who helped plan this adventure, to the crew and staff who made it happen, and the
participants who will share the lessons and stories they learned with their families and
friends. Through these types of experiences, we can make Canada a better place for
