This municipality of 3,300 residents was founded in 1857 by six fishing families from the Magdalen Islands. After depending on fishing for many decades, in 1948, the village was industrialized. The biggest solid ilmenite (iron and titanium) deposits in the world are located 43 km north of the community and the ilmenite mine is an important economic resource for the town.
