Saguenay-St. Lawrence Marine Park is located where the Saguenay and St. Lawrence Rivers meet. In 1990, the federal and Quebec governments agreed to establish the marine park, to be co-managed by both governments. The park was officially established in 1998. First Nation peoples (Algonquin, Iroquois and Innu) have met in the area of the modern-day marine park for at least 5,500 years to exploit the marine resources. Whales, including a colony of belugas, are drawn to the rich food supply in the area.
