Establishing a Pan-Canada Baseline Soundscape

Svein Vagle is an oceanographer who interprets the ocean through sounds in his work with the Department of Fisheries and Oceans at the Institute of Ocean Sciences in Sidney, B.C. His work on the Canada C3 voyage will create a coastal marine soundscape of Canada using an underwater microphone, called a hydrophone, to record underwater sounds that originate from man-made sources, from natural sources, such as wind, waves and rain, and from the animals that live there. Underwater sound is considered an important factor to ecosystem health.
